Chess League Rules
By joining the league you are agreeing to these rules:
I. Agreement
By playing in the league I will display good sportsmanship and represent my school and the game of chess in a respectful and fun manner.
II. Unsportsmanlike like Conduct
There is to be no trash talking, swearing etc. It is also polite to say good game after games, but not mandatory. Please treat everybody politely. If you choose to interact with others in chats that are not participating in the league do it at your own risk. Not everybody on online sites will practice good sportsmanship; the league is not responsible for things that happen on the site outside of league games, however we do expect you to still practice good sportsmanship as we are a guest on the site. Please tell your captain or an officer of the league if you face what you feel to be unsportsmanlike.
a) First offense of unsportsmanlike conduct: 3 match suspension
b) Second offense of unsportsmanlike conduct: 6 match suspension
c) Third offense of unsportsmanlike conduct: 1 season suspension (# of matches in a season) plus expulsion from playing in Playoff and Championship games.
III. Cheating
Cheating is a big concern of online play. Chess is a thinking game, cheating takes away the fun and will not be tolerated in the league. There are ways of catching cheating, games will be reviewed at random, and if you suspect cheating, please report it. Cheating consists of but is not limited to: asking a friend for help, having somebody else (that isn't from your school) play your game for them, using a chess engine to assist your play and/or using a chess database to assist play. Please email the cheating committee if you suspect cheating.
a) Consequences for cheating: Expulsion from the league for a full season + all future playoffs and championships.
b) Second offense: Expulsion from the league indefinitely.
c) Cheating in the Championships or playoffs: Team with cheater automatically loses that round, cheating player expelled from league indefinitely
IV. Being Late
Please be on time to the league matches. All times scheduled are by California time (Pacific). Being late more than 5 minutes after start time will result in a "late slip". If you receive 3 late slips, it will count as a forfeit against your team. Being late 15 minutes or more after the start time will result in a forfeit, an automatic loss on that board. Forfeits disrupt the flow and excitement of the league so PLEASE tell your captain if you can't make a game ahead of time.
V. If you can't make a game
Please notify your team captain ahead of time so that a replacement can be found (if possible, if not, your team will take a "loss" on that board). Don't just drop the game, make sure you notify the captain AT LEAST one week ahead of time so that the roster can be changed.
You MAY use Junior Varsity players to substitute for Varsity players if somebody can't make the game.
VI. Playing the Game
During the game, there are a few rules to remember:
Takebacks can be given for obvious mouse slips. There is no requirement for giving takebacks for mouse slips, please do not send excessive messages about it, and please do not harass the other player, sportsmanship rules will come into play. Takebacks can not be given for blunders. Please do no request them.
While it is not against the rules to chat a little during the game, please keep it to a minimum, spamming your opponent is against the rules.
Repeated draw offers are also considered rude and against the rules. Please don't offer more than one draw unless the position changes drastically.
Do not purposely run your clock out of time in a lost position.
No adding time to either player's clock. The time control is part of the game.
Please report these things to your Tournament Director.
VII. Exceptions to the Rules
If the President and Vice President both agree, rules can be overruled or edited for specific issues that may come up. Captains can override this overrule with a unanimous vote against it.
